Ecosystem services in conventional farming systems. A review

چکیده
Ecosystems worldwide are being disrupted under increased pressure from human activities. Nevertheless, most conservation studies and restoration efforts have so far focused on ecosystems of high heritage value related to their species diversity and/or the rarity habitats species. However, “ordinary nature” (all everyday, non-spectacular non-protected landscapes, ecosystems) is also threatened by ecosystem disruption, which could affect major ecological functions thus supply services (ES). Conventional farming systems, mostly composed agroecosystems characterised ordinary nature, already known deliver some ES (e.g. pollination, carbon sequestration). no systematic search has been done yet determine identified how there studied in these conventional systems. We performed a first evidence map (review key articles show, at glance, points that studied, highlight gaps base) identify characterisation measurement provided review 189 international scientific articles. excluded production for economic benefit, as this topic well documented agriculture found nutrient cycling (49.7%), sequestration (46.6%), pest reduction (48.1%) or pollination (36.5%) supplied agroecosystems. Correlations were between spatial scale studied: example, storage was determined more agricultural plot scale, while cultural landscape level. Our yielded 74 frequently used indicators, 50 easily measurable operational indicators significant ES. Afterwards, one challenge be addressed further each indicator range values should considered positive provision, likely ecosystem-dependent.

Ecosystem Services in Biologically Diversified versus Conventional Farming Systems: Benefits, Externalities, and Trade-Offs
We hypothesize that biological diversification across ecological, spatial, and temporal scales maintains and regenerates the ecosystem services that provide critical inputs—such as maintenance of soil quality, nitrogen fixation, pollination, and pest control—to agriculture. Agrobiodiversity is sustained by diversified farming practices and it also supplies multiple ecosystem services to agricul...
متن کاملEcosystem Services from Edible Insects in Agricultural Systems: A Review
Many of the most nutritionally and economically important edible insects are those that are harvested from existing agricultural systems. Current strategies of agricultural intensification focus predominantly on increasing crop yields, with no or little consideration of the repercussions this may have for the additional harvest and ecology of accompanying food insects. Yet such insects provide ...
متن کاملA social–ecological analysis of ecosystem services in two different farming systems
In this exploratory study we use existing in situ qualitative and quantitative data on biophysical and social indicators to compare two contrasting Swedish farming systems (low intensity and high intensity) with regard to ecosystem service supply and demand of a broad suite of services. We show that the value (demand) placed on a service is not necessarily connected to the quantity (supply) of ...
متن کاملApplying the ecosystem services framework to pasture-based livestock farming systems in Europe.
The concept of 'Ecosystem Services' (ES) focuses on the linkages between ecosystems, including agroecosystems, and human well-being, referring to all the benefits, direct and indirect, that people obtain from ecosystems. In this paper, we review the application of the ES framework to pasture-based livestock farming systems, which allows (1) regulating, supporting and cultural ES to be integrate...
متن کاملFarming for Ecosystem Services: An Ecological Approach to Production Agriculture.
A balanced assessment of ecosystem services provided by agriculture requires a systems-level socioecological understanding of related management practices at local to landscape scales. The results from 25 years of observation and experimentation at the Kellogg Biological Station long-term ecological research site reveal services that could be provided by intensive row-crop ecosystems. In additi...
